However In partnership with Northumbria University Sport we are offering a weekend climbing introduction in the English Lake District. The aim of the weekend is to give you a taste of outdoor rock climbing in the birthplace of the sport. We will be staying and climbing in the North Lakes, specifically Borrowdale, a long, beautiful valley, with Keswick and Derwent Water at one end and the Scafell Mountain Range at the other, the crags are perfect for begginners, offering safe and exciting climbing opportunitiers with come incredible views!
We will be staying in the borrowdale, where exactly will depend on numbers of bookings.
Programme We will arrive on the Friday early evening, we'll get settled in, have some dinner and get an early night. On the Saturday we will be up early, having breakfast and aiming to get down to Shepherds crag where we will spend the rest of the day exploring the expansive crag. On the evening those that desire can wonder down the to the local pub for few drink or into Keswick for dinner. On the Sunday we will have the option to visit a different crag, this will depnd on a decision made by the instructors as to what is best suited. Climbing will continue to after lunch at which point you will depart back to Newcastle.
Do I need any experience of outdoor climbing? No Experience of outdoor climbing needed, however some indoor experience would be an advantage.
Do I need any equipment? We will expect you to have harnesseses and shoes, if not you can hire them. All other equipment is provided.
How do I get there? The university will be organising transport
Is it safe? As with any sport there is an element of risk, but this is managed by experienced and qualified staff and thus its an incredibly safe activity.
Will we be doing any 'Leading' outdoors? No, the weekend is aimed at being an being introduction to outdoor climbing, we will be using bottom and top ropes.
What if it rains? If the forecast is showing persistant bad weather then we will cancel at least 48 hours in advance, if the weather is intermittent then the trip will continue. If the weather during the trip becomes unclimbable then the instructors will aim to take you to an indoor wall, of which there is great quality and variety.(this additional cost would be covered by Kingsway)
