The Floor..

We have finally discovered a floor to be proud of, under the lino, plywood, laminate and carpet was a wooden floor ingrained with over 80 years of dust and dirt.

The floor has been repaired and patched over the years with a myriad of different methods and materials, from thick boards to thin boards and from oak to pine. The floor tells the story of 80 years of use from tiny feet.

The most time consuming task of all has been the sanding! We hired in an industrial floor sander, however the floor would not yield easily, we needed 5 packs of sanding sheets to break through the stain and decay to reach what you see above you.

Whats next, well how do we finish the floor?? a natural varnish so you can see the different woods and patterns, or do we stain the floor a darker colour so they all match... we shall see.

Upheaval...

Its been a very busy few weeks since my last post. We have been cracking on with the dining room, and i must say its looking amazing.

Before we could start we had to get under the floors, the original floor joists needed replacing and new stone pillars build for the new joists, it was a very dusty job.

After a week of toiling under the floor we have the joists replaced and have started fitting new floorboards. Its looking great, its just a pain working with an old building as everything is a little wonky.

We are also revitalizing the heating system, the old cast iron radiators are off, which was a back breaking job. We are going to fit more modern economical radiators, these combined with the log burner will save a fortune and make the room toasty warm!

The floor is going to be great though, we aim to sand it all down next week and will give it a good varnish. Here's how it looks now.

With the floor been nearly finished we have turned our attention to the decor, the baby blue has to go! After much deliberation we decided on green. I think you'll like it...

The Restoration Begins....

For the next few months we're are embarking on a huge project across the centre.

Starting in the dining room we are having a complete overhaul, from a new floor to a new roof. This has been a long time coming and both myself and Adam have been looking forward to starting.

The Floor

The first job was to strip the floor, lifting up the 40+ year industrial lino. We had no idea what we would find, we hoped for the original pine floorboards but we just didn't know.

As we lifted the horribly heavy lino and then a layer of plywood we discovered a beautiful floor, the original pine floorboards!

There is some bad news however, in places the floor has been patched with chipboard which will need replacing, but all in all we are over the moon.

What next?

We have so many ideas of what we think we should do, one I am very excited about is a log burner in the corner, which I think will look great.

We have got a mammoth task ahead of us, the roof primarily. We are hoping to secure some grant funding to help us with that but we will have to keep are fingers crossed.
